Update Ardnamurchan Transitions Project 2021

The archaeology activity that took place at Swordle Bay, Camas nan Geall and at the Ice House in Fascadale has now come to an end. The work was a continuation of the Transitions Project which has taken place in Swordle over the past few years in addition to the newly funded ‘Adopt a Monument Scheme’. The team from Archaeology Scotland including Adopt-a-Monument Ardnamurchan Project leaders Paul Murtagh and Phil Richardson (and colleagues) will leave us for a while and return for the planned activity at Camas nan Geall in early September (details to follow soon).
The test pit work at Swordle has revealed cremated bones coming out the tail of the cairn (previously thought empty), quite a few human teeth, some jet beads from Whitby, animal bones and lots of charcoal from the dun.

The building survey of the Fascadale icehouse got off to a good start with the survey of room 1 (the packing room) more or less complete. Some rather stunning 3d models of the interior of the icehouse, and the salmon coble have been created by volunteer Alex Conlon using LiDar. See below.

More work on this site will continue at some point in the future.
